Michael Crichton was born in Chicago in 1942, grew up in New York, and studied at Harvard College and Harvard Medical School. He wrote thrillers during medical training, often under names including John Lange and Jeffrey Hudson. A Case of Need and The Andromeda Strain brought early attention. The latter established a documentary style of reports, diagrams, timelines, and technical procedure that made an invented biological crisis feel administratively real.
Crichton moved across novels, film direction, screenwriting, and television. He created ER from medical experience and directed Westworld, already interested in a controlled entertainment system turning against its designers.
