Spoiler-free reading guide
Should You Read Sunrise on the Reaping Before the Movie? (No Spoilers)
Yes. I recommend reading Sunrise on the Reaping before watching the movie. Haymitch's sharp, bitter voice is the reason.

My recommendation
Read the book first for Haymitch himself
I've read Sunrise on the Reaping, and its greatest strength for me is the young Haymitch: quick, sarcastic, and painfully aware of the system around him. Let his voice introduce you to this part of Panem before an actor gives him a face.

Suzanne Collins published the novel on March 18, 2025. It follows Haymitch Abernathy during the 50th Hunger Games, the Second Quarter Quell, 24 years before The Hunger Games. This Quell takes twice the usual number of tributes. That is the setup; the discoveries beyond it are yours.
Why I recommend reading the book first
Haymitch is not an immediately lovable hero. That is part of his appeal. The older mentor's drinking and cynicism can make him seem impenetrable; here, the intelligence, anger, and instinct for survival belong to a young person still living through the pressures that shape him. His younger self was the part of the book I liked most.
His internal commentary matters. The sarcasm tells you how he processes the Capitol's cruelty. You get the intelligence underneath his hostility, as well as the fear and anger that feed it. I want that private voice in mind when I watch someone perform the role.
District 12 matters just as much. Hunger, cold, and exhaustion are daily conditions before the arena enters the picture. Those pages give the spectacle a human cost before it becomes something to watch. I also liked the psychological nuances in his relationships with the other District 12 tributes, where survival puts pressure on every interaction.
My reservation is the middle: some stretches pause for internal reflection just when I wanted the tension to keep moving. The thinking enriches Panem, but occasionally interrupts the momentum. It did not change my recommendation. The same attention to Haymitch's mind is a large part of why I would read this story first.
The Capitol's manipulation is the other reason to leave yourself unspoiled. I will not explain the arena's secrets or discuss the ending. Let the book reveal how power controls what people can know.
Do you need to read the original Hunger Games books first?
If you have read the trilogy, you have the background I would want before Sunrise. There is no need to turn preparation for one film into a complete reread.
If you have only seen the original films, you already know Panem's basic rules and the older Haymitch. You can move to Sunrise from there. The novels add context, but reading all three is not a condition for understanding the premise.
If Panem is new to you, I would begin with The Hunger Games, then Catching Fire and Mockingjay. Starting directly with Sunrise is possible, but it means meeting Haymitch before the earlier books have established his place in the series. The full reading-order guide explains that tradeoff without making this article another timeline.

Where does The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes fit?
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is the other Hunger Games prequel, originally published May 19, 2020. It follows a young Coriolanus Snow around the Tenth Hunger Games, 40 years before Sunrise and 64 years before the original novel.
It adds an earlier view of the Capitol and the Games. For a full first read of the series, follow publication order and put Ballad before Sunrise. If your immediate interest is Haymitch before his film, though, Ballad is useful background rather than an absolute prerequisite.

What we know about the movie
As checked on October 16, 2026, Lionsgate schedules The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping for a US theatrical release on November 20, 2026. Francis Lawrence directs, and Joseph Zada plays young Haymitch Abernathy. The adaptation draws on the same Second Quarter Quell story.
The official film site has trailers and a Meet Haymitch featurette. You can skip them if you want the novel to supply your first images. Those promotional materials do not establish which passages the completed film keeps, changes, or leaves out.

My final recommendation
Give Haymitch the chance to be a voice before he becomes a performance. His intelligence, rough edges, and awareness of a rigged system are what made this book work for me. I recommend reading it before the movie and keeping the arena's surprises to yourself until Collins reveals them.
