Strange America and dead gods

Robert Jackson Bennett was born in Louisiana in 1984 and published Mr. Shivers in 2010. Early novels such as The Company Man and American Elsewhere use American settings, noir, corporate secrecy, and cosmic unease. City of Stairs began the Divine Cities trilogy, set after a colonial power has defeated the gods of its former rulers and inherited the political consequences.

The trilogy made Bennett's interest in infrastructure explicit. Miracles, roads, trade, memory, and law carry histories of domination. Foundryside later turns magical inscription into a technology that corporations control and thieves can repurpose.

Ana, Din, and evidence in an altered empire

The Tainted Cup combines fantasy ecology with a fair-play mystery. Din records with perfect accuracy but must learn what matters; Ana Dolabra interprets through appetite, provocation, and disciplined inference. Their different minds make investigation collaborative rather than a display of one genius.

A Drop of Corruption broadens the partnership while preserving evidence that can survive the final explanation. Bennett's prose is clear, his worlds conceptually dense, and his best exposition arrives through a professional task. City of Stairs is the entry for political fantasy, Foundryside for magical technology, and The Tainted Cup for mystery. Across them, power is most dangerous when it has become infrastructure and therefore looks too useful to question.
