Solving the mystery inside an impossible world

Bennett moved from strange American settings into invented fantasy worlds. In both, the useful system everybody depends on is usually hiding the history of who paid for it.

Strange America and dead gods

Robert Jackson Bennett was born in Louisiana in 1984 and published Mr. Shivers in 2010. Early novels such as The Company Man and American Elsewhere use American settings, noir, corporate secrecy, and cosmic unease. City of Stairs began the Divine Cities trilogy, set after a colonial power has defeated the gods of its former rulers and inherited the political consequences.

The Divine Cities books are interested in the things people use every day. Miracles, roads, trade, memory, and law all carry the history of who ruled whom. Foundryside later turns magical writing into a technology owned by corporations and stolen by people who find other uses for it.

Ana, Din, and evidence in an altered empire

The Tainted Cup combines strange fantasy biology with a mystery that gives the reader a fair chance. Din remembers everything but has to learn which details matter. Ana Dolabra thinks by eating, provoking people, and testing unlikely connections. The case needs both minds; it is not a performance by one infallible genius.

A Drop of Corruption expands the partnership while leaving enough evidence for the final answer to make sense. Bennett's prose is clear even when the worlds are complicated, and he usually explains them while somebody is doing a job. Choose City of Stairs for political fantasy, Foundryside for magical technology, or The Tainted Cup for mystery. His books keep asking what happens when an abusive system becomes so useful that nobody can imagine living without it.
