Peter Straub: books, reviews, and where to start

Peter Straub (1943-2022) wrote horror and dark fiction in his own right. His collaboration with Stephen King is one route into that work, not the whole of it.

Peter Straub: horror fiction and the Talisman collaboration

Start the collaboration with The Talisman, then read Black House and Other Worlds Than These. All three have Book Review Guide reviews; the remaining titles below are a selected bibliography.

A career beyond Jack Sawyer

Ghost Story, Shadowland, Floating Dragon, Julia, and Koko belong to Straub's own fiction rather than the Talisman sequence. His writing also extended to short fiction and poetry. That breadth matters when choosing another book after the collaboration: a familiar author name does not mean another visit to Jack's worlds.

The Bram Stoker Awards archive records recognition for The Throat, Mr. X, Magic Terror, Lost Boy Lost Girl, In the Night Room, and A Dark Matter, alongside a 2005 Lifetime Achievement Award. These are useful landmarks in a substantial career, not a ranking of where every reader should begin.

The collaboration with Stephen King

The Talisman introduced Jack Sawyer in 1984. Black House followed in 2001 with Jack as an adult. Other Worlds Than These completes the trilogy with an October 6, 2026 publication date and both authors credited. King completed the final novel after Straub's death, using ideas Straub had sent him. The credit recognizes that contribution; it does not mean the two writers worked together on a finished manuscript in 2026.

Read the three novels in that order if the collaboration brought you here. The Talisman supplies Jack's childhood and the combined authorial voice. Black House turns his adult return toward supernatural crime. Our Other Worlds Than These review values its farewell and grief while finding the changed voice noticeable. The Talisman order guide explains the preparation and Dark Tower connections without reproducing the earlier novels' endings.

The Talisman

4 / 5

The first Jack Sawyer novel pairs a childhood rescue quest with the Territories. Our 4/5 review values Wolf and the combined voice while finding the middle's detours uneven.

Read second: adult Jack

Black House

4.5 / 5

Adult Jack returns in a supernatural crime novel with explicit Dark Tower connections. Our 4.5/5 review recommends its grim case and supporting cast, with a reservation about the opening narration.

Read third: the finale

Other Worlds Than These

4.5 / 5

The final Talisman novel takes an older Jack Sawyer into Mid-World. Our 4.5/5 review values its grief and bittersweet closure while finding it a demanding entry point for newcomers.
