Biography and criticism
Cassandra Clare: Shadowhunters across generations
Begin the recommended series route with City of Bones. The Dark Artifices supplies the closest character background to The Wicked Powers.
One world, several entrances
The Mortal Instruments starts in contemporary New York with Clary Fray discovering a hidden society. The Infernal Devices moves to Victorian London; The Last Hours follows a later London generation. The Dark Artifices centers on the Los Angeles Blackthorns and Emma Carstairs. These settings change how much the protagonists already know about the world, as well as which family histories stand behind them.
Clare’s recommended broad reading sequence begins with The Mortal Instruments, then moves through The Infernal Devices, The Dark Artifices, The Last Hours and The Wicked Powers. It is a reading sequence rather than historical chronology. The guide below lists each series in order and puts the companion collections alongside the stories they extend.

The Dark Artifices and the next generation
Lady Midnight, Lord of Shadows and Queen of Air and Darkness form one trilogy. Family care, forbidden intimacy and the consequences of the Cold Peace tie its investigation and political conflicts together. Kit Herondale, Ty Blackthorn and Drusilla Blackthorn develop within that household before taking central roles in The Wicked Powers.
The Last King of Faerie is announced for November 3, 2026 as the first novel in the final Shadowhunter trilogy. It is covered here through its official premise and reading context. There is no completed review of it on this page, and the spoiler recap concerns only the three earlier Dark Artifices novels.
Companions and books beyond Shadowhunters
Better in Black collects ten romantic stories and a preview of The Wicked Powers. Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy, The Bane Chronicles and Ghosts of the Shadow Market serve different purposes within the wider continuity. A collection is extra narrative space, not a replacement for the series whose relationships it assumes.
Clare also writes The Chronicles of Castellane, beginning with Sword Catcher and continuing with The Ragpicker King. That adult fantasy setting is separate from Shadowhunters. The bibliography below is selected context for these series, while the five covered books have their own spoiler-free analyses. No numerical scores have been assigned to those analyses.
