Adventure writing before and alongside the novels
Peter Heller's official biography describes him as an award-winning novelist and longtime adventure writer. It records work as a contributor to NPR and as a contributing editor for Outside, Men's Journal, and National Geographic Adventure. His nonfiction bibliography includes journeys involving whitewater, surfing, ocean conservation, and travel in China. Those records establish experience reporting from physically demanding environments; they do not by themselves support invented claims about how any particular novel feels to read.
Heller earned an MFA in fiction and poetry from the Iowa Writers' Workshop. Literary study and years of field reporting both feed his novels without turning them into disguised memoir. The Dog Stars was not an isolated turn into post-apocalyptic fiction; it grew from a career already divided between imagined stories and firsthand writing about dangerous places.
The Dog Stars begins the fiction bibliography
The Dog Stars, first published in 2012, was Heller's debut novel. The author and publisher describe Hig living after a flu pandemic at a Colorado airfield, flying a 1956 Cessna and responding to a radio transmission that may point beyond his defended perimeter. The official listings present it as a standalone, not the beginning of a numbered sequence. That matters now that a 2026 movie tie-in edition and a Ridley Scott adaptation can make an established novel look like a new release.
Heller's later fiction includes The Painter, Celine, The River, The Guide, The Last Ranger, Burn, and The Orchard. Their conflicts repeatedly unfold in consequential landscapes, including rivers, parks, mountains, roads, and remote terrain.

Begin with The Dog Stars for Hig's fractured narration, grief, Jasper, Bangley's survival logic, and the tension between violence and the natural world. The novel stands alone, so you do not need to follow a series order.
