Biography and criticism

From a teenage caper to illustrated horror

The four novels tell separate stories. Their publication order shows how Rekulak moved from a 1980s coming-of-age caper to suspense, family secrets and illustrated horror.

Before the supernatural thrillers

Rekulak worked in publishing at Philadelphia's Quirk Books. His debut novel, The Impossible Fortress (2017), follows fourteen-year-old Billy in 1987. A scheme to get hold of a magazine brings him into contact with Mary, a gifted programmer, and gives a goofy teenage caper a more tender story about friendship and first love. The Commodore 64 belongs to the plot because making games is how the two of them spend time together.

The Impossible Fortress was an Edgar Award finalist. Hidden Pictures went on to win the 2022 Goodreads Choice Award for horror, and The Last One at the Wedding won the 2025 ITW award for Best Standalone Thriller Novel. Rekulak's books have appeared in more than forty languages.

Two mysteries you can look at

In Hidden Pictures (2022), Mallory Quinn takes a job looking after five-year-old Teddy. His simple pictures grow more detailed and disturbing, and Mallory wonders whether they point to an old crime. You see the work she's trying to interpret, so you can follow the evidence alongside her.

Look What the Cat Dragged In (2026) shifts that uncertainty to the person doing the drawing. Penny Padgett's sweet comic strip takes a disturbing turn while she is looking after a cat named Godfrey. Her cartoons show the change in her everyday life, while a separate set of old-looking illustrations gives the trouble a longer history. Freida McFadden praised the return of the kind of artwork she remembered from Hidden Pictures.

A wedding with different reasons to worry

The Last One at the Wedding (2024) puts a father at a secluded estate for his daughter's wedding. Frank has been estranged from Maggie, so he has a reason to be polite even when her new family's wealth and secrecy make him uncomfortable. The suspense grows out of what people will say to a man who is afraid of losing his daughter again. It is the family thriller of the four.

Where to start with Jason Rekulak

Hidden Pictures is a good introduction to the visual mysteries because the question of what Teddy could have drawn is easy to grasp from the start. Look What the Cat Dragged In gives that idea a stranger domestic setting and a cartoonist whose own work becomes the evidence. Each has its own cast and mystery, so either can come first. The Last One at the Wedding starts with a father and daughter under social pressure. The Impossible Fortress is the one about growing up and getting a game to work.
