Abigail Owen's Crucible trilogy
The Crucible Books in Order: What to Read Before The Wrath Gods Reap
Lyra and Hades move from a divine tournament to a threat against Olympus. The three-book order, November finale and edition differences.

The three-book order
Follow Lyra and Hades from the first novel
- The Games Gods Play (2024)
- The Things Gods Break (2025)
- The Wrath Gods Reap (November 17, 2026, US)
These are three parts of one continuing story, not separate romances with a new couple in each. The Wrath Gods Reap is announced as the trilogy's final book. As of October 22, 2026, it is still forthcoming in the US; the first two novels establish the relationship, divine politics and consequences it continues.
Abigail Owen's The Crucible puts Greek gods into a recognizable modern world. In San Francisco, their power is part of ordinary life, while mortals carry the danger when divine rivals compete for control. Lyra begins with little status and good reason to avoid their attention.
Hades offers protection and opportunity without explaining everything he wants from Lyra. She has to survive the trials while deciding how much of his attention to trust. The descriptions below follow that conflict into the sequels without giving away the first two books' endings.

How the story develops
Three books, with changing rules and stakes
The first novel makes Lyra a competitor in a system controlled by gods. The sequel moves beyond that tournament, and the finale puts the gods' own position under pressure.

Book 1 - 2024
The Games Gods Play
A mortal champion, an immortal patron - ebook
Lyra works as a clerk for the Order of Thieves in San Francisco, a city under Zeus's patronage. Zeus has cursed her to be unlovable. Being chosen by another god brings attention without much reassurance about his intentions. Hades makes her his champion in the Crucible, a contest held every hundred years to decide who will rule Olympus. The gods compete through mortal representatives, making human lives the price of divine ambition.
That arrangement gives the romance a sharp imbalance. Lyra must endure dangerous trials, while the god whose interests she serves controls information and power she lacks. Attraction does not answer why he selected her or how far his protection can be trusted. Each test creates an immediate survival problem; the relationship adds the harder question of whether help can also be a form of control. This is where the trilogy establishes both the rules of the competition and the uneasy bond it will keep testing.

Book 2 - 2025
The Things Gods Break
Tartarus replaces the tournament arena - ebook
The sequel moves Lyra into Tartarus, where the Titans are imprisoned and escape carries consequences beyond her own survival. The trials now belong to a hostile realm whose captives could threaten the order maintained by Olympus. Getting out and keeping the world safe are no longer comfortably aligned goals.
The change is more than a darker backdrop. In the first novel, mortals are made to compete within the gods' political ritual. Here, the threat reaches the structures that keep those gods in control. Hades's connection to Lyra makes the cost personal, while the possibility of the Titans' release makes it much larger than either of them. Their relationship continues directly from The Games Gods Play; the sequel assumes its discoveries rather than introducing an independent couple or a fresh version of the world.

Book 3 - forthcoming finale
The Wrath Gods Reap
November 17, 2026 in the US - hardcover
The announced finale reverses who has to face the trials: Hades becomes the one tested by the gods, with his own power at stake. Lyra is dealing with a force she cannot yet fully control. An adversary called the Deceiver threatens their allies and the already unstable relationships within Olympus.
The tournament idea returns with the balance of power changed. A god's position is now vulnerable, and Lyra has responsibilities that cannot be reduced to surviving the next test. The hidden enemy also makes distrust a danger for the wider divine order. The Wrath Gods Reap is presented as the conclusion to Lyra and Hades's continuing story. Its premise points toward the consequences of both earlier novels; it does not offer a new entry point or a separate romance.
Do I need to read the first two books before The Wrath Gods Reap?
Yes. The Games Gods Play establishes why Lyra distrusts divine attention, how mortal champions serve the gods and what Hades's involvement means to her. The Things Gods Break changes the setting and the scale of the danger without leaving that relationship behind. The finale continues those changes.
Knowing the names from Greek mythology will not supply that history. Owen builds her own arrangements of power, trials and personal obligations around them. Starting with book three would reveal earlier consequences before showing the decisions behind them, and would leave Lyra and Hades's changing trust without its foundation.
Ebooks, hardcovers and the special editions
The first two options above are ebooks. The Wrath Gods Reap option is a hardcover, whose announced Deluxe Limited Edition treatment belongs to the first print run. Decorative print features do not apply to the digital books, and an edition change does not add another installment to the sequence.
The Games Gods Play also has a separate deluxe paperback released in October 2026, with foiled edges, new interior art and an announced bonus scene. Those are features of that print edition, rather than extras promised for the ebook shown here. The novels' order stays the same whichever format is used.
How intense is The Crucible?
This is New Adult romantasy with explicit sex, strong language, blood, gore, death and sustained danger. The romance and violence are written for a mature audience. Owen's content note covers additional sensitive themes, including abuse, grief and threatening situations.
Other romantasy reading guides
Callie Hart's Fae & Alchemy series begins with Quicksilver and continues in Brimstone, moving through portals and alchemy into a Fae conflict. That is a different setting from Owen's divine tournament, though both series tie a dangerous alliance to a developing romance. The Quicksilver and Brimstone guide explains their sequence and the November special editions. The monthly fantasy selection covers other scheduled releases across the genre.

Is The Wrath Gods Reap the final book?
Yes. Abigail Owen announces it as the third and final Crucible novel, scheduled for November 17, 2026 in the US.
Can The Games Gods Play be read as a standalone?
It is the starting point of a continuing trilogy. The relationship and wider conflict carry into The Things Gods Break and The Wrath Gods Reap.
Should I read The Things Gods Break before The Wrath Gods Reap?
Yes. The finale continues the second novel's consequences and assumes the earlier development of Lyra, Hades and their world.
Is The Crucible based on Greek mythology?

Is The Crucible YA or adult romantasy?

Is The Crucible primarily fantasy or romance?
The two plots are intertwined. Lyra and Hades's attraction and trust affect decisions inside a larger story of dangerous trials and divine power.
