Reading order
Hoid's Travails Reading Order: Tress, Yumi and The Fires of December
There is no required order. Choose the story you want: a sea adventure, an art-centered romance, or December's warning to a skeptical kingdom.

The short answer
You can read Hoid's Travails in any order
Tress of the Emerald Sea, Yumi and the Nightmare Painter, and The Fires of December are standalone Cosmere novels narrated by Hoid. You do not need Tress before December, and you do not need Mistborn or Stormlight before any of these three. Publication order is an option, not homework.
Hoid links these books through his voice and his travels around the Cosmere. Their central characters and immediate stories are separate. The useful first question is which kind of story you want him to tell.
I would start with Tress for a sea adventure, Yumi for the relationship between two artists, or December for an outsider challenging the role her society has assigned her. Those are choices of emphasis, not steps toward unlocking the next novel.
The choices
Choose your first story
The list below follows original publication sequence. It is a convenient way to browse, not a required reading order.
2023
Tress of the Emerald Sea
Start here for a sea adventure
Tress leaves her island to search for Charlie across dangerous spore seas. The voyage makes a straightforward adventure goal the doorway into an unusual world, with Hoid supplying the storyteller's voice.
Buying decision: Choose Tress if a rescue voyage, ships, and a young woman discovering what she can do appeal more than court politics or an art-centered relationship.
2023
Yumi and the Nightmare Painter
Start here for art and romance
Yumi summons spirits through ritual work; Painter patrols a city troubled by nightmares. Their connection brings two isolated lives together, making art, duty, and understanding another person the main attractions.
Buying decision: Choose Yumi if you want the developing bond between two leads. Its different worlds are part of that relationship, rather than preparation for December.

2026
The Fires of December
Start here for identity and a threatened kingdom
December travels along rivers of colored demon blood to warn the court about a coming plague. Her insight clashes with the authority others are willing to grant her. Hoid's playful narration sits beside a serious story about belonging.
Buying decision: Choose December for its visual setting and its heroine's resistance to fixed social roles. My 4/5 review recommends the journey while noting a less focused middle.

Publication order and chronology answer different questions
If you like following an author's publication sequence, read Tress, then Yumi, then December. Tress and Yumi were first published in 2023; December followed in 2026. The sequence is a tidy way to keep track, but none is a numbered prerequisite for another.
Sanderson places December's events before the other two while explaining that Hoid tells its story after telling theirs. The events and the act of narration therefore have different orders. That is an interesting distinction for returning readers, not a reason to move December ahead of a book whose premise interests you more.
How much Cosmere background do you need?
No earlier Cosmere novel is required. Hoid's Travails gives you independent stories on different worlds, rather than a continuous plot that begins in Mistborn or The Stormlight Archive. Let the immediate story introduce what matters.
Returning readers can recognize Hoid, recurring ideas about magical power, and references that place a world within the larger setting. Naming those connections in advance would turn an optional pleasure into a spoiler list. You do not need to identify every reference for the central characters' choices to make sense.
What belongs to Hoid's Travails?
The defining link is Hoid telling the tale. The Sunlit Man and Isles of the Emberdark are also Cosmere standalones, but they are not additional steps in this three-book group. Their wider connections are a separate reading decision.
Wind and Truth is Stormlight Archive book five. It should follow its own series, and reading it is unnecessary preparation for December. For the larger choice between a standalone and a longer series, use our Brandon Sanderson starting-book guide.
Which December release date should you use?
The ebook and audiobook were published October 6, 2026. The US Tor Books hardcover follows December 8, 2026 and is listed at 384 pages. Choose a format before comparing dates; the later hardcover schedule does not postpone the digital story.
Tress and Yumi are discussed here as companion novels, not as books reviewed by this site. The Fires of December review below is our covered title in this group.
Quick answers
Questions readers ask before buying
Do I need to read Tress before The Fires of December?
No. They are independent stories in Hoid's Travails. Start with December if its premise interests you most.
Is The Fires of December book three of a continuous trilogy?
It is the third published novel in this group, but the books are not a continuous trilogy with a required sequence. Hoid's narration is their shared framework.
Should I read Yumi before December?
Only if you prefer its art-centered relationship story. Yumi introduces no mandatory prerequisite for December.
Does Hoid narrate the audiobooks himself?
Hoid is the fictional narrator, not the audiobook performer. For The Fires of December, Macmillan credits Michael Kramer as the reader.
